A novel algorithm that takes into account fluctuations in the price of electricity during the transmission of Internet data, it can bring  companies such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon multimillion-dollar savings.

Research conducted by scientists at MIT and Carnegie-Mellon University in collaboration with the network operator Akamai has shown that companies operating in the web can thus reduce energy costs by up to 40 percent - said in its online edition of the magazine 'Technology Review'. Asfandyar Qureshi, a graduate student at MIT-on, already in October 2008 introduced the concept of smart routing algorithm that takes into account in their calculation of electricity prices. After the release of this publication scientist and his colleagues tried to interest his idea of industrial companies, among which was the operator of Akamai. This helped Qureshiem, providing real data for testing purposes. At the beginning, researchers analyzed information on electricity prices of 39 months for 29 large U.S. cities. That which immediately threw them in the eye, were surprisingly large variations in rates - and even in the closely located from each region. But the concept of routing based on the price of energy will only work when a company can choose from several datacenters, and the data transmission costs are not too high. Moreover, the current infrastructure is not necessarily suited to saving electricity in standby mode - for example, it can not simply turn off.
